The purpose of this video is to provide a brief overview of whether California is the correct state to file your case. In legal terms, the courts have jurisdictional requirements that need to be met for the state and county you are filing in. For divorce cases, the courts in California generally require parties to live in the state of California for six months and in the county they are filing in for 3 months. For non-married parties seeking the court to make custody orders, the court generally looks at the habitual residence of the minor child.
